Dark House is a setting of the seventh canto of Alfred Tennyson's elegiac "In Memoriam A.H.H." Begun after the untimely death in 1833 of his beloved friend Arthur Henry Hallam, "In Memoriam" is an intense expression of the poet's grief and search for hope in the face of profound loss. The seventh canto is a description of Hallam's house and the longing of the poet for the companionship from which he once drew such joy. For Tennyson, Hallam's absence now casts a dreary pallor over the surrounding scenery that even the rising sun fails to dispel. Vocal score. Approx. duration: 3-4 minutes.
