The "Sitting In" Series was developed by cellist Natalie Spehar as a tool for string players learning to improvise. Each part includes a transcribed vocal melody, chord symbols, sample "solo" ideas, and an original play-along (complete) string part written by Natalie. This takes the initial intimidation out of "sitting in" with the group, enabling the string player to head to rehearsal with a range of ideas to pull from-- whether they are aiming to improvise a solo/lead part to the chord chart, jam along with the rhythm section, or create an entirely instrumental cover version of their own!
Natalie's "Sitting In" Series is also meant to encourage string players to explore alternative genres (in addition to their classical roots) and experience the joy of improvising in a community setting. As their comfort grows with multiple play-throughs, the player can move toward utilizing the part as a mere launching point, or "prompt" into original, improvised material. (In the meantime, these parts can also be played along to original recordings and karaoke tracks at home as a practice tool!)
