A few years ago, a young piano student had finished learning a Halloween song from her lesson book.

She asked me for another Halloween piece to learn at her next lesson. I decided instead to write a piano composition with a "spooky" theme that she could play.

The following week I composed this piece, however, I could not think of a title.

I told her that if she would learn to play this new piece, she could give it a title.

After learning to play it, she mentioned that she had thought of a title.

While practicing the piano at home, her pet black cat would pace around the piano. Then she asked me, "For a title, what about: THE BLACK CAT WALTZ." I answered, "That's Purr-fect!"

The sheet music is clearly notated with dynamic and articulation marks, phrasing, suggested fingerings, chord symbols and appropriate musical terms for playing. The right hand melody incorporates chromatic scale-like patterns while the left hand utilizes a continuous stride.

This intermediate piano solo can be played for Halloween or at anytime. It is an excellent teaching piece that can be used in recitals and school musical events. It is a delightful musical listening treat for audiences and ideal for students of all ages.
