LYRICS IN ROMANIAN:
Cămăşile
de Grigore Vieru
A fost război.
Ecoul lui
Şi-acum mai este viu.
Cămăşi mai vechi, mai noi
Amară amintire de la fiu.
De-atâtea ori fiind
Pe la izvor spălate,
S-a ros de-acum uzorul
Şi, alb, bumbacul
S-a rărit în spate
Şi nu le-a îmbrăcat de mult
Feciorul.
Cămăşi mai vechi, mai noi
A fost război.
Ci maica lui
De ani prea lungi de-a rândul
Tot vine la izvoare:
Ea şi gândul.
Şi iar luând cămăşile în poală,
De cum ajunge sâmbăta,
Le spală.
Căci mâine
Fac băieţii horă-n sat,
Şi fete multe-s:
Câte-n flori albine.
Şi-atunci băiatul ei, cel drag băiat,
Cu ce se-mbracă, bunul,
Dacă vine?

A BASIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
The Shirts
by the Romanian poet Grigore Vieru
It was war and its echo is still heard.
Older, newer shirts -
Bitter memory of her son.
Being so many times
Washed at the spring,
The wear is gone from now on
And white cotton
It has shrunk backwards
And he hasn't worn them in a long time
The boy.
Older, newer shirts -
It was war.
But his mother often goes to the source:
She and her thought.
And taking his shirts in her lap again,
She washes them on Saturdays
Because tomorrow (on Sunday)
The boys dance in the village,
And there are many girls like bees on flowers,
And then her boy, dear boy,
What will he wear if he comes?
