The word peregrine means pilgrim, and so the idea of a pilgrimage, where traveling itself becomes a transformative experience, is central to the piece. Travel has always held an elusive but profound significance for me; there is something about it that seems to resonate with us on a deep level, and I've never taken a substantial trip that failed to unlock a sense of deep and unexplainable meaning for me. Peregrinations was originally written for the excellent cellist James Jaffe, who premiered it in San Francisco in February, 2015, and has since championed the piece.
