Danny Boy is an English Ballad written in 1910. It was originally set to a different melody by songwriter Frederic Weatherly, but he changed the lyrics to fit the tune Londonderry Air at the suggestion of his Irish-born sister in 1913. Even without the poignant lyrics, this melody stands as one of the most expressive and tuneful songs in Western music, and there have been many famous versions over the years by a wide variety of artists.
Fast forward to Japan, 2002. Jazz pianist Keith Jarrett plays a completely improvised concert, with fully seventeen separate movements/pieces. After playing for more than two hours, he returns to the stage to play play three familiar encores in spontaneous fashion, including Danny Boy, His treatment of this emotional melody embraces both a powerful simplicity and a wealth of harmonic sophistication, and creates a revelatory rendering of this iconic work.
I have ada[pted Jarrett's performance for double flute quintet - 3C Flutes/Alto/Bass and 3C Flutes/Alto/Contrabass - in a way which does not try to emulate all of the considerable artistic liberties in the performance, but rather detangles his melodic treatment a bit, while still relying on the unique harmonic structure to create a sensationally beautiful arrangement. No jazz experience is needed to play this chart, and you and your audience will fall in love with this musical experience. The contrabass flute part is also supplied in bass clef, and can be played on either bassoon, cello, or keyboard.
