Product Description

A free-for-all arrangement of traditional themes in the Flamenco style Bulerías inspired by my studies with Juan González Triguito in Madrid in the late 1960s. The piece is in the Jerez style of Bulerías with lots of thumb work and short breaks in the rhythmic flow. The thumb playing the dominant role in the melodic passages and the many taps (golpes) gives the piece an earthy rustic character. The piece is played more or less in the tempo of old style Bulerías al Golpe, as modern Bulerías are often played much faster. Beginning in Phrygian E minor the piece goes through an abrupt key change to Phrygian D minor, moving later through normal A minor and finishing in A major. The many, sometimes sudden unexpected, key changes are typical of a good Bulerías where all rules and regulations are thrown to the wind! The piece is notated in the first position but I often play it (as in the YouTube video) with a capo at fret 2 where it sounds brighter and lighter. Flamencos usually speak of the tones they are playing as if they were played in the first position even though they might be playing with the capo at fret 2 or 3, or even 4 or 5. The piece is somewhere in the advanced intermediate to advanced range for students of Flamenco guitar.
