2018 Holiday Contest Entry
A book of 9 Christmas Solos for your earliest beginner: Jolly Old St. Nicholas; Good King Wenceslas; O Come All Ye Faithful; O Come, O Come, Immanuel; Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella; God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen; Hark! The Herald Angels Sing; Jingle Bells; and We Wish You a Merry Christmas (basically, every public domain Christmas song I could thing of that would be playable in the middle C position). As a piano teacher, I always find myself writing out solos for my very young first year students. I am sharing my work to spare another teacher or parent the time. All solos are in the middle C position and have simplified rhythms using only quarter, half, dotted half, and whole notes, with the exception of the last song (We Wish You a Merry Christmas) that uses 8th notes as well. This is a good way to introduce 8th notes because it is a familiar song. There are no rests written in the music to avoid distracting the young student from the notes of the melody that just switches between hands. The songs start very simple and get progressively more difficult with each song and I've included instructions for each one when it adds a new concept (L.H. over and 8th notes) so a student with very basic knowledge of note reading could take this book and learn the songs themselves. Finger numbers are only included at the very beginning of each song and only if it does not start on middle C in order to promote note reading. There is a 3 page Teacher Accompaniment Lead Sheet included with this book (just the melody and chord symbols for your own improvisation)... at some point I might write out the accompaniments and offer them for additional purchase.
