The North Star' is a melancholy dialogue between euphonium and piano. It features a triplet motif which is developed and ornamented and is set in a moody minor key with some unexpected shifts and dissonances. The long phrases will require excellent breath control and the wide pitch range of a little over two octaves makes this a challenging solo. Whilst technically playable on the trombone the position shifts are so awkward that it is almost impossible to keep a legato line except for the most advanced players. This piece needs to be played with a very bright, clear, focused sound to create the atmosphere of the lonely, icy night on the ocean.
