The work was originally written for Orchestra, one of the most famous piece of Elgar as with "Pomp and Circumstance No.1, No.4, "Salut d'amour" (Love's Greeting). Specially, Variation IX (Adagio) "Nimrod" has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions.

Instrumentaion is for both Low brass quintet (4 Trombones & Tuba) and Trombone Quintet.
