This expressive, heartfelt Rob Thomas arrangement makes a great choice for an intermediate SATB choir! In difficult times, we lean on others to help us get through and build us back up. But asking for this needed support is not always easy. Rob Thomas (of Matchbox 20 fame) penned this ballad for his 2015 solo album, The Great Unknown, expressing the difficulty of helping someone work through painful emotions.
This choral arrangement aims to strike a balance--always in motion, but remaining expressive throughout. Parts of the original song have been cut or modified to enhance the pacing and make it build to a bigger climax. (Specifically, several repetitions of the pre-chorus are omitted, and an intro and short instrumental break have been added.) A baritone solo anchors the beginning and end of the song, while an alto soloist takes over verse 2 with choral accompaniment. A sense of growing desperation builds, and is finally released by a quiet, sparsely accompanied final chorus.
