These six pieces evoke the pre-serial harmonic and melodic explorations of Arnold Schoenberg and his students, Anton Webern and Alban Berg towards the end of the first decade of the 20th century. Each piece is individual and unique in character. No ground, once explored, is revisited and so the music renews itself in every succeeding piece. It culminates in a final rondo movement, at 32 bars, the longest of the six, which reflects the baroque/classical rondo/rondeau form but refines and distills the essence of that form to an astonishing degree of conciseness, brevity and directness.
