Programme note:
The Washington Post (often called The Washington Post March) is a march by American composer John Philip Sousa (1854 - 1932). In 1889, the recent purchasers of The Washington Post newspaper asked that Sousa, the leader of the United States Marine Band, compose a march for the newspaper's essay contest awards ceremony, in conjunction with a campaign to promote the new ownership of the newspaper. The Washington Post was performed at a ceremony on the grounds of the Smithsonian Museum "with President Benjamin Harrison in attendance".
