Programme note:
English composer Edward Elgar wrote the orchestral work Variations on an Original Theme, popularly known as the Enigma Variations, between 1898 and 1899. The work is dedicated "to my friends pictured within", each variation being a musical representation of one of his close acquaintances. The name of the ninth variation "Nimrod" refers to Augustus Jaeger, Elgars music editor.
