This beautiful song, arranged here for solo piano, deserves to be much better known. It dates from 1900 and was performed at a British promenade concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1906. The song was republished in 1932 in the "News-Chronicle Music for the Home", a collection of popular classical pieces edited by the composer. As a champion of musical performance, Landon Ronald intended this volume to encourage home music-making. "The habit of listening to music instead of performing it...is so deeply to be deplored" he wrote in the preface. "It is up to all music-lovers to do what they can to prevent it from spreading... If this book assists to revive the desire of self-performance which is innate in most of us, then the aim and object of the 'News-Chronicle' and the Editor will have been achieved."
