Gabriel Fauré originally planned this elegie as the start of a cello sonata, but the other movements never came into being; eventually he published the piece stand-alone, with piano accompaniment. Later, Fauré scored for the work for full orchestra. I've taken the complete orchestral score and reduced it for string orchestra. Your ensemble will enjoy performing this lush and dramatic accompaniment behind the equally rich melodic solo part.

The parts are not difficult. The piece provides a rich study in romantic harmonies, all combined in a tight package.
