Written for junior high school girls chorus, Away In A Manger, unlike most of Richard's music, make no use of dissonance in the vocal lines. However, the piano accompaniment makes full use of 7th, 9th, and 11th chords, and requires an accomplished pianist capable of playing in a laid back jazz style. As is often the case with this style, the pianist must also be able to play chords containing very wide intervalic relationships.
