2017 Holiday Contest Entry
This carol is one of the Christmas seasons
most loved! Originally titled "Luthers Cradle Hymn," "Away in a Manger" was
thought to have been penned by the reformer Martin Luther for his own children;
however, that claim has never been fully substantiated.
In this delicate arrangement for
solo piano, the memorable melody is simply accompanied by sustained chords.
This setting slowly builds to the third stanza, where the pianist is challenged
with some octaves in both the right and left hands. In this climactic
statement, the lyric passionately pleads, "Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee
to stay."
Both late intermediate and advanced
pianists will enjoy playing this arrangement of a classic Christmas carol!
