Product Description

Oskar Böhmes Brass Sextet, Op. 30, is the definitive Romantic era brass sextet. Sadly, compared to the wonderful Romantic brass quintets written by Victor Ewald, the sextet is much more challenging. Amateur brass ensembles tend to find the sextet unapproachable.

The piece was originally written for:
- 1 cornet in Bb
- 2 trumpets in Bb
- 1 alto horn or bass trumpet in Eb
- 1 tenor horn in Bb
- 1 "high tuba" in Bb

Were scored this for:
- 1 cornet in Bb (with the expectation that a trumpet may be used)
- 2 trumpets in Bb
- 1 French horn in F
- 1 trombone in bass clef (with the expectation that a euphonium may be used)
- 1 tuba in bass clef

Weve attempted to make the piece more approachable for amateur brass ensembles. Certainly it should be playable by a good college ensemble, and we believe some or all movements should be playable by a very good high school ensemble. Some compromises were required to meet our goal. Weve tested both this edited music and the original music with an amateur brass ensemble and the improvement in playability for amateur musicians was striking.

Weve made the following changes:
- Modified articulation and dynamic markings throughout to be a bit more consistent with common practice.
- Modified the "high tuba" part throughout, dropping the part an octave as appropriate to improve playability on a standard tuba.
- Changed the transposition of the Eb alto horn part to F throughout to better accommodate the amateur French horn player.
- Transposed movements 1, 3, and 4 from an Eb minor key signature down a half step to D minor. Movement 2 was left in Eb major.
- Slightly modified the written navigation in movement 3 to reduce the requirement to navigate partial measures.
- Transposed and modified key signatures in parts of movement 4 to improve playability.

Modulations were modified to make this as seamless as we could.

Sometimes the composer's name is spelled "Oscar Boehme".

Performance time is approximately 15:34.
