It is a virtuoso showpiece that can be performed by either 2 violas, 2 cellos, or 1 viola and 1 cello.   This is not your typical solo with lame accompaniment; the two parts are completely equal in importance. The melody bounces back and forth between the two instruments, and the second line is often as interesting as the melody. This is a huge crowd-pleaser!
