Product Description

The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, form a set of variations for harpsichord composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. First published in 1741 as the fourth volume in Bach's Clavier-Übung series ("Keyboard Practice"), the work is considered one of the most important examples of the variation form. After exposing the aria at the beginning of the piece, there are thirty variations followed by the repetition of the aria. The Variations were probably written around 1741 for Count Hermann Karl von Keyserling; they were played for the count by his young and talented harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, to whom they were ultimately dedicated. Goldberg Variations were seen in the past as a dry and boring technical exercise. Today, however, the content and emotional scope of the work has been recognized and has become the favorite piece for many classical music listeners. Variations are widely performed and recorded and have been the subject of many articles, books and analytical studies.
