Product Description

I Heard a Bird Sing brings together 66 original rounds and canons by composer and choir leader Jake Alexander some quick to learn, others more intricate and rewarding all written to spark creativity and joy.

Each song divides into a maximum of three or four parts. The shorter, simpler rounds are ideal as warm-ups or to teach by ear, while the richer pieces feature voices weaving around each other in polyphonic harmony. A few include optional piano parts, but all work beautifully a cappella.

The texts are drawn from poems, prose, proverbs, and speeches. However you use them in rehearsals, workshops, or performances these songs invite you to experiment, listen, and experience the magic of voices coming together.

Here are some examples of rounds and canons from the book, beyond the ones featured on this page:

Each Slow Dusk (words by Wilfred Owen)
Hope Is the Thing (words by Emily Dickinson)
Loveliest of Trees (words by A.E. Housman)
Only When It's Dark (from a speech by Martin Luther King Jr.)
Remember, Remember (an English folk poem)
Song of the Witches (words by Shakespeare)
