"Er is alles in de wereld" is based on the poem by the same name of the Dutch poet Lucebert. While in a piano, voice and viola ensemble, we were quite dissapointed by the amount of pieces written for this combination of instruments. I found the qualities of the instruments very suited to each other, as the viola adds a beautiful warmth and personality to the well-known sound of the piano-voice duo, combining some of the cello's depth and the violin's clarity and singing qualities, therefore giving great flexibilty to the composer.

I felt inspired by these qualities to create a new piece that adds to the repertoire for this unique and colourfull ensemble. Feeling also the need for more classical voice repertoire in the Dutch language, I decided on the hopeful "There is everything in the world". The result is a mostly languid work, with long lines and impressionist harmonies. It presents a well thought-out counterpart to the more established works for this ensemble by Frank Bridge and Johannes Brahms.
