Product Description

This arrangement was inspired by the latest rendition of this well-traveled and well-covered song, Edward Norton performing it as Pete Seeger in the Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown." But its roots lie deep in Africa nearly a hundred years ago.
The song was written and first recorded in 1939 as "Mbube" by Solomon Linda, a South African musician who had a menial job at a record company. It became a major hit across Africa. The lyrics were in Zulu, which later led to the incorrect assumption that it was a traditional tribal song, one of the many quirks that also led to major copyright disputes.
It was first recorded in the U.S. in 1951 by Seeger's group, The Weavers, under the title "Wimoweh," which is a mangled version of an original Zulu lyric that means "You are a lion." But it got serious traction in 1961, when an American doo-wop group, The Tokens, powered it to No. 1 on the Billboard chart. It got another big boost as part of the soundtrack to Disney's "The Lion King."
