When the world seems dark and dreary, people with hope in their hearts will still try to make the world a little bit brighter. There are always beautiful things for us to appreciate, people to be thankful for, and opportunities to contribute in a positive way. This piece was composed to inspire those of us who feel lost or hopeless to find light in dark places, even if its just planting a few flowers. After all, what is more hopeful than brilliant daffodils poking their heads out of the soil in the greyness of early spring? Only the Hopeful Plant Flowers begins with a solitary solo flute motif, evocative of the first bulb of spring pushing through the cold earth. A call and response begins as other flutes join in the chorus of spring, each flute a new flower emerging from a hard winter. Each subsequent section begins with the young plants putting on new growth as they survive an early frost and then bloom in the welcome warmth of spring. The piece concludes with a sweeping melody accompanied by the movement of wind and rain, the field of flowers resilient through natures storms.
