Asparagrass Lass is an original fiddle folk tune based on an event that occurred around 1941, when my mother was approximately 9 years old. A friend of hers came over for dinner, and she came from a poor family. This little girl had never seen a great deal of asparagus, and my mother's mother (grandmother) was serving it as a side dish. Little Laura screamed, "Asparagrass!" And then she proceeded to put all the asparagus on her plate. My mother's mother was always trying to display "high class" manners, so she gently let the little girl know that she had to take just 2-3 spears, and pass the rest around the dinner table.
