This arrangement tells the story behind the song in musical word pictures. It begins with the ringing of a ship's bell as it sinks beneath the waves. The first verse uses a single note melody against broken LH chords that give a picture of "peace like a river" and "sorrow like sea-billows". The second verse takes on a minor tone with the right hand using a thumb melody inside of triplet broken chords and the left hand surging like angry waves in running arpeggio-like passages reminding the performer of the times when "Satan should buffet ... and trials should come". The melody breaks back into the Major as the sun bursts through storm clouds when the reminder of "let this blessed assurance control that Christ hath regarded my helpless estate and hath shed His own blood for my soul" arrives.
