Artaria Editions AE544

Each of Arnolds three sets of eight sonatas (two for piano solo, the third for violin and piano) bears a dedication. John Welcker, London, printed the violin sonatas in 1775 under the inspection of the composer; Stationers Hall did not copyright the volume.

No autograph survives and Walshs issue, a copy of which is preserved in the Cambridge University Library under the call number MR360.a.75, is the only source of this edition. The title page reads: A Third Sett of / Eight Lessons / for the / HARPSICHORD or PIANO FORTE / with an ACCOMPANIMENT for a / Violin / Composed by / Samuel Arnold Mus: Doc: / Opera XI / LONDON. Printed and Sold by WELCKER No 17 Gerrard Street St Anns Soho / Where may be had by the same Author 1st Books of Lessons. 6 Overtures Op 8. 3 Books Vauxhall Songs and all his other Works. James Blundell in ca. 1780 and Longman & Broderip in ca. 1785 reprinted Welckers score minus the dedication page.

The present edition adheres as faithfully as possible to the intentions of Welckers source. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardized throughout and, where missing, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. The notation of appoggiature has also been standardized to minimize confusion. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets.

This edition is dedicated to the memory of John Shaw (19572013).
