If you've heard only one tango in your whole life, this is quite likely the one, written by Argentinian (but French born) Carlos Gardel in 1935. You know, a beautiful woman slithers across the dance floor to wrap herself around her partner, and passion ensues. The name means "by a head," referring to a winning horse-racing margin; the songs lyric tells the story of a gambler who compares that compuslion with his attraction to women. You might remember it from "Scent Of A Woman" or "True Lies." It has appeared on a vast number of movie soundtracks. Hence its recognizability.
