"What defines a classic? Back when I was 19 years old or so, I sat at my piano while looking at The Real Book, a famous anthology of jazz standards. It occured to me that its canon seemed closed. These songs had endured through decades, and meant something new to each generation. We don't see much of that anymore... I figured there wasn't a good reason as to why new jazz standards weren't being introduced, so I thought I would have my go at it. I want the children of 2080 to be able to slowdance to one of my songs playing on the jukebox; what resulted was A Toast to the Sky."
