Desert Carnival is a challenging work for soprano saxophone and piano and was inspired by 1. Burning Man festival 2. Chick Coreas exciting piece Cappuccino with Joe Farrell on soprano, amazing energy. While I have never been to a Burning Man festival I love the pictures and concepts of it, very visual and expressive. In fact in my work the opening theme on soprano is developed to represent a person walking and experiencing each part of the festival. Chicks work is pure passion and I imbued this attribute into Desert Carnival.
Also I used the piano and saxophone as equal partners, this is not a piano part in the background supporting the sax but is an intricate part of the work. This is a dialogue between the two instruments.
