Through the verses, it's revealed that the narrator had misinterpreted the love interest's words and actions as signs of mutual affection, when in reality those perceived intimations were merely projections of the narrator's own desires. The chorus serves as a plaintive plea for the love interest to join the narrator on life's journey so they are not left alone and "stranded" in a metaphoric paradise without their love.
