Product Description

John Wilbye (c 1574 1638) was an English madrigal composer. He was employed for decades at Hengrave Hall, near Bury St Edmunds. His style is characterized by the use of false relations between the major and minor modes.

Draw on Sweet Night comes from John Wilbyes Second Set of Madrigals of 1609, published when the composer was 35. It has become one of Wilbyes most cherished works and has been recorded by the likes of I Fagiolini, The Tallis Scholars and The Consort of Musicke.

Wilbye labelled his score "apt both for viols and voices" so I feel justified in making this instrumental arrangement. When adding expressive markings, I had in mind the lyrics and their emotions.

INSTRUMENTATION: Essential: Eb, Bb 1-4, Bass and either Bb5 or Alto. Optional: Contra-alto and Contrabass

 6 minutes
