Product Description

Farewell, dear love Low voice (1601), by English composer Robert Jones (c.1577-1617), who was one of the most prolific composers and lutenists of his day.  Of the more popular musical forms of English Renaissance (the late 15th century to the early 1600s) was the lute song: a piece for single voice accompanied by the lute.  Most lute songs are about love, and tended to be a rather melancholy affair with disdainful ladies refusing to acknowledge the ardent advances of hopeful lovers as is Farewell, dear love.  Its popularity is obvious in that this song was quoted line by line in Shakespeares Twelfth Night(Act II, scene iii), and, at a later date, introduced into his play As You Like It. This 2023 setting is scored for low solo voice and keyboard accompaniment.  Jones simple melody and poetry is retained and is embellished with the piano accompaniment.  This is an excellent piece for young singers, introducing them to style, form and technique.  Performance time: 2:30+- This is second in the series of arrangements of Robert Jones Lute songs.
