Product Description

Robert Cunningham's Sonnet XVIII is a setting of William Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 ("Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?") for baritone voice, piano, and alto recorder.  The central idea of Shakespeare's poem is that the otherwise ephemeral beauty of its human subject is immortalized through the artistic medium of the sonnet.  This setting takes that idea to the next level by memorializing this sonnet, along with the whole era in which it was penned, through the artistic medium of music.  Composed in 1982 and revised in 2019, this work is intensely Romantic, but also has an antique flavor encapsulating the music of Shakespeare's time.  The full score and individual parts for the baritone voice and the alto recorder are included.  Total duration:  5:40.
