A violin trio written using inspiration from the ragas, or scales. of the South Indian Carnatic music tradition. Each new ragam is marked in the music (look for "Hamsadwani," "Amrithavarshini," or "Harikamboji") so that the performers can look up other examples and get used to what the sound they are trying to achieve is. An Intermediate to Advanced level piece, it incorporates mixed meter, shifting, and counter-point based figures. Exploring tonalities unique to a non-Western tradition is a great way to introduce skills necessary in playing non-familiar music. This piece is a great way to start down the path of exploring the rich musical traditions from around the globe in a familiar setting for Western Classical violinists.
