For a sextet/septet of 4 C flutes, alto flute, bass flute, and optional piccolo. For larger groups that are doubling parts, the opening should be played with each part solo. Between measures 39 to 49, the other players on each part can gradually enter. The YouTube link is performed by the Solstice flute ensemble playing with single parts and without piccolo. This arrangement of Silent Night opens with a lone voice, a single flute quietly playing the tune. Little by little, the others enter, building the music until the whole ensemble joins together in song.
