Product Description

Drake Mabry performs an improvisation (SROI = single reed oboe improvisation) on a normal Loree oboe using a small single reed mouthpiece made in France in the 1920's by Chedeville. These mouthpieces were originally intended for young students who did not live near an oboe teacher and also for jazz musicians. Don Redman recorded a solo using one of these with the Fletcher Henderson orchestra around 1927. Mr. Mabry found about 30 original single reeds from the 1950's some of which were still playable! The mouthpiece has a fairly wide facing enabling wide glissandos and special effects. The mouthpiece can be played with a double lip (oboe) embouchure, a single lip (saxophone) embouchure and even with the teeth. I would like to add that the mouthpiece does not try to imitate the usual oboe sound but instead discover new possible sonic experiences. This recording comes from a live concert performance made in 1980 in California.
