Product Description
"Freedom's Cost" is a beautiful lament on the price that has been
paid by the few for so many, full of irony. With an 18th-century text by
William Collins, this art song has been written with the style Schubert
in mind (it was a Composition Modeling class project I completed when
working on my doctorate). Haunting and lugubrious, it captures the
essence of the ironic text.
Lyrics:
How sleep the brave who sink to rest, by all their countrys wishes blest! When Spring, with dewy fingers cold returns to deck their hallowed mould. She there shall dress a sweeter sod than Fancys feet have ever trod. By fairy hands their knell is rung; by forms unseen their dirge is sung! There Honor comes, a pilgrim grey, to bless the turf that wraps their clay; and Freedom shall awhile repair to dwell a weeping hermit there.
--William Collins (1721-1759)
