MASTERS IN THIS HALL (Piano Accompaniment Track)
SATB or Acappella

An old French carol, "Marche pour les Matelots" by Marin Marais (1706), this tune is a favorite at Christmas and is popular with carolers. The words were written by Willia Morris (1860)

In a 16th century style, "Masters in This Hall" refers back to a simpler society when the poor, bringing news of Christ's birth to the "Masters in this Hall" was a warning to the proud.

This song explains "raising up the poor and casting down the proud" is also contained in the song of the Virgin Mary as in Luke 1:51. This carol describes a poor man who wished to draw his master's attention to the birth of Christ by telling how he had met shepherds travelling to Bethlehem. He joined them and saw the Christ child in his Mother Mary's arms. The chorus reveals how the birth of Christ has raised up the poor and cast down the proud.

SATB, but may be sung acappella

Chorus, men's section, ladies section, then all repeat on the chorus
