ABOUT BMF PROGRAMS
Kansas City Area Youth Jazz (KCAYJ) is an after-school enrichment program for high school and college students interested in the intensive study of jazz, improvisation, and professional recording practice. This merit-based program offers a tuition-free experience culminating with the recording of a professionally produced and commercially released album on the ARC label. Concerts are presented to audiences new to the music. KCAYJ serves students from urban core and underserved schools throughout Kansas City including a mix of male, female, Black/ African-American, Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic/Latino, and Multiracial ethnicities.
Our team consists of industry professionals who serve in critical roles as coaches, and mentors. Moreover, the program provides students with real-life insights that support our mission; exemplifies a synergy rarely realized within existing education models, and is under the umbrella of the Burnett Music Foundation (BMF) established in 2007. Other core programs of BMF include:
· Artists Recording Collective (ARC) - a new brand collective record label that protects the rights of its artists and engages their professional expertise to assist developing musicians. An integral subset of ARC is its Next Generation Jazz Jam Sessions which serve high school and adult learners from urban core and underserved schools.
· Jazz Artistry Now - a Jazz Journalism program that features established writers, and offers students opportunities to engage in community presentations and hone their literary skills through the platform.
· Bird Boot Camp + Musical Salute (BIRD) - a program designed to honor Jazz pioneer, Charlie Yardbird Parker. It attracts students, grades 7-adult in a full "Charlie Parker" immersion experience including coaching by master musicians, educational lectures, and a culminating BIRD tribute performance that is free and open to the public.
Our mission is to illuminate Jazz music as an original American art by engaging the next generation with the purpose of building modern living wages through challenging, meaningful and inspiring experiences.
