Product Description

Keys to the Northern Pass (30'45") was inspired by the sounds and history of the Cairns region, in Far North Queensland. From the city to the reef, to the beaches where the rainforest meets the sand, a world to itself.

Sugar Cane presents the movement of the cane trains, the sun shining brightly, and the crackle of flames in the night sky.

The Last Lament opens with a bugle call to prayers, followed by a setting of Gibbons' triumphant hymn 'Great King of Gods'. While European settlers were singing hymns and basking in the glory of God, others were not so fortunate. In 1884, at least twenty women, children, and men of the Yidindji people were killed near what is now called Yungaburra.

The Coral Sea is bright and full of life, from coral reefs to fish of all shapes and sizes. The gentle waves lap against beaches with pristine sand, or covered in rocks, or along the groves of mangroves. The Coral Sea was also the site of a great naval battle, rumours of which swept the coastline. In the end, all is at rest as the bugle announces the last light.

The Dark Within speaks of Kalkajaka, a large granite formation featuring many crevasses and caves. There are a number of sites sacred to the Kuku Nyungkai people, and many folk stories arose from European settlers in the area. Who knows what secrets the mountain holds?

As the Moon passes by, and the stars hide behind a maidenly veil, The Night's Sorrow is heard, whispering in the dark.

This work is an exciting and moving orchestral piece that will leave the audience wanting more.
