Originally conceived as a harmonic exercise for piano, this piece was adapted for a string sextet of three violas and three cellos, in order to exploit their sustaining qualities and rich timbre. Just one of the six parts changes a note per chord, thus creating the next harmony. Tones are sustained for as long as the players wish, who also determine their own dynamics, before moving on to the next chord. The effect is hypnotic, as a sense of (musical) time seems to be suspended. Sequence III is accessible for the listener and is appropriate for most standards of cellist and viola player, including students and advanced musicians. This 4-page document is the full score, and serves as the full playing score for all players.
