The Mixolydian Quartet was composed for a local string quartet who wanted to play something new. The piece is in a mixolydian mode throughout most of the work. The first seven intervals of the opening melody are found in each main theme through the work which helps bind it together as one piece. It varies in style from grandiose Americana for the opening movement to a calm and placid Howard Shore reminiscent slow 2nd movement (played with mutes).

The difficulty level is quite advanced for the first violin and viola, it is slightly simpler for the cello. The reason is, it was written to the abilities of the quartet members. The cello player also had an amazing instrument that had the most resonant C string I've ever heard, so the open C is used quite often in the cello part.

This work may be suitable for highly advanced high school/upper school students, university students, semiprofessionals and professionals.

The work is approximately 18 minutes long.

The recording supplied with it is synthetic as I was never able to obtain a recording of the original quartet playing the whole work.

The work is quite popular with those who have played it.
