Product Description

The Sonata for Modern Life is one of my more unusual works. Written for bass clarinet and piano, it was commissioned by one of the most talented bass clarinet players I have ever heard. Zach Abramovitz approached me and asked me to write a challenging duet piece for him to premier. I knew I had enormous freedom to write challenging music for the performer. I decided to make the work very challenging, but not so difficult that it couldn't be performed often. I decided to focus on rhythmic intensity and also on making full use of the instrument range. The result was a three-movement sonata that was premiered at the University of Kansas in the spring of 2006. The title and music came from my own experiences of traveling abroad from a time when I was questioning a lot of the things that seem accepted about our modern Western culture. This 1st movement reflects on the obsession in Western society to acquire material possessions. Movement 2 is about the anxiety, and the 3rd movement is based on the constant hurry. While I admit it is difficult to project these things in music, these were the issues of modern society I was thinking about when I wrote these notes
