Product Description

Arranged by Mike Strand, ASCAP

La Cachila is one of the best-known and beloved of the traditional tangos that originated in and around Buenos Aires. You can study the details of this tango and its famous composer, Eduardo Arolas, on the todotango.com web site.

The audio sample presents the entire solo, using piano sound from Finale PrintMusic.

This work is a good example of moving away from the familiar 16-bar song structure. Arolas's main theme is 15 bars long, which only serves to increase the melancholy and drama!

La Cachila's lyrics spell out the pathos and drama evoked by its music. Below are the original lyrics in Spanish, by Hector Polito, and my free-style English translation .

While not literal, my translation follows the spirit and meaning, as well as the rhyming pattern of Polito's lyrics.  This means you can easily sing my translation to Arolas's music.

La Cachila

The Little Sparrow

English translation by Michael M. Strand, Jan. 2014

I will never forget those days - they were my finest.
With my love and your consent, Just like the little sparrow,

I built my love nest.

Your love satisfied my need, my need and my desire
In your warm fire.
And my best work not for hire, tenderly I did for you.

But one night there came
A storm with cold, driving rain,
A hurricane, wind gone insane, wrecking our home and our dreams.

Oh God, tell me! Why this had to be!
The fates dealt me such a rotten hand!
The grief and pain within me I cannot withstand, now that Im left here so lonely, and
Our love that was in our youth so bright,
Now black with bile from this bitter plight. Endless affliction and despair have torn apart my aching heart.

Never more upon your sweet face will gaze my sad eyes,
And my sick and shattered soul, just like the little sparrow, breaks down and cries.

My oppressive solitude
And sleepless nights make my life a dark disaster,
Since the day our Lord and Master took you up into the sky.
