Product Description

Herman Groenewegens 24 preludes are meant as a homage to Frédéric Chopin. A prelude is an introductory instrumental composition with no fixed form. It probably originated as a sort of improvisation played before a larger piece, for warming up, or to display virtuosity as well as for tuning purposes. In the seventeenth century the prelude took its place as the first piece in a suite (a series of dances) or before a fugue (a musical form in which multiple voices and different repetitions play a central role) During the Romantic era - an art movement at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century - the prelude developed into an independent and full musical form in its own right and became an unmissable form in the world of classical music. Johan Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Claude Debussy, Aleksandr Scriabin, all produced works in this genre. The 24 preludes by Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) are probably some of the most famous ones and are based on the full cycle of fifths. (A full cycle of fifths comprises 24 keys, hence 24 compositions.)
