6 pages (2 pages of music)

In Greek mythology, Lethe was one of the five rivers of the underworld. Its waters symbolized forgetfulness and oblivion. The souls of the  dead drank from the river before entering Hades to erase their early memories.  Lethe also refers to the goddess of the same name who is the personification of  oblivion. In poetry, Lethe is a metaphor for forgetfulness or for the  underworld in general.

Lethe, composed for guitar solo, evokes the mythological  river's dark and pensive character. The piece uses only minor chords and  employs all the minor chords in the chromatic scale. The main theme is a dirge  set as a quasi-chorale in B minor. The arpeggios in the middle section suggest  the rivers swirling waters. The wandering harmonies evoke a sense of  dreaminess.
