Passacaglia, despite it's title, is actually a set of variations on two contrasting themes- one folk-like and one neo-Baroque. The two styles compete and finally reached a compromise at the end with the pentatonic folk theme altered to become more diatonic and thus more "classical" sounding. There are plenty of opportunities for showing off for both the violin and the piano and a wide variety of stylistic references.
