William Hawley's "O Blandos Oculos" was composed for Soprano Rosalind Rees and Mezzo-Soprano Kimball Wheeler, setting the verse of the Roman poet Alcimius (fl. 354 A.D.). The work was premiered on June 9, 1981 in the Carnegie Recital Hall (now the Weill Recital Hall), New York, with Jennifer Sills, Viola; Julie Green, 'Cello; Paul Suits, Piano; composer conducting. In his New York Times review of June 11 of that year, Bernard Holland wrote, "William Hawley's 'O Blandos Oculos' was quiet and contemplative...".
